Hospitalists at Children’s Wisconsin are doctors who take care of kids in the hospital. They talk with your child’s regular doctor and other caregivers. If your child’s health changes, the hospitalist will let your doctor know. When your child goes home, the hospitalist will share what happened in the hospital and what care is needed next.

Pediatric hospitalists are doctors who have finished:

• Four years of medical school
• Three years of training in children’s health (called a pediatric residency)
   

Hospitalists treat many kinds of sicknesses and health problems that need hospital care. They also help other doctors, like surgeons, take care of kids in the hospital.

A pediatric hospitalist will care for your child for one of three reasons:

• Your child’s primary care provider is not near Milwaukee
• Your child’s primary care provider is near Milwaukee but is not on the Children’s Wisconsin medical state
• Your doctor works at Children’s Wisconsin but asked the hospitalist team to help
   

Each day, the care team meets to talk about your child’s health. This is called “rounds.” You can join and share your thoughts. Rounds happen in or near your child’s room, usually between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. It’s a good time to ask questions and help make decisions about your child’s care.
